Last night we sat in for Keith W. on Globegig Radio as the §Wired§ überhost was elsewhere enjoying the sonic delights of Anathema. I say ‘sat in’ though to be more accurate most of the time I was standing in, literally standing as I’d determined to fanny about on the ‘decks’, as it were (although the reality being I use a ‘controller’ to play and mistreat digital files).

As a result The Fused Wireless Programme became deFused – as it does on these occasions when there’s little chat and more music in the mix, unmistakably so to anyone viewing via the studio webcam as I do a mix session (or attempt to do a mix session).

So last night’s show was just that, a mix of dark ambient, down tempo, drone, experimental, avant-garde, witch house, etc., loosely strung together by way of segueing and mixing, all independent electronic artist from various corners of the planet – here’s the playlist.

Anyhoo, bottom line is you can listen to the entire show here, or just the mix here.

    Thanks for reading. 😉

Tx 161028Friday’s show was a blast. We had a three hour Hallowe’en Special (from 20.30-23.30 (UK BST)) with the studio fully loaded in terms of Halloween ghoulishness with cobwebs, skulls, heads, spiders, hanging witches and aliens.

It was only right, therefore, I should don a bit of fancy dress, so it was the ‘Jason’ mask (beneath which another skull type thing). I spent the first hour talking through two layers and wearing my spex on the outside – inside they’d steam up, though the regular plumes of smoke belching out of the machine in the studio didn’t help with my myopic disability. 😉

Baphomet was in residence also, overseeing the proceedings. He took the first shift then it was Cthulhu’s turn, just prior to our playing ‘Cthulhu Waits‘ by Uberbyte, it’s as though he had a hand in the programming of the show! 😮

We had a good few folk logged in to the chat room, with positive comments on the scene on the screen before them, and some good conversation about the tracks and the films we played samples from to enhance the show.

The only downside to the whole evening was striking the set after the show, or at least packing up the elements I’d brought it (smoke machine, green lights, LED candles, pumpkin, UV light, and not forgetting the overseers, Baphomet & Cthulhu. Depending on how the calendar pans out we’ll all three of us be ready to do it all again next year.

You can hear the show (again) here, the page also has the playlist.

    This gives you an idea of what the studio looked like, decked out for Hallowe’en;

Friday’s show wasn’t perhaps the best thus far – nothing wrong with the music, but the hosting left a bit to be desired (while no excuse I was a tad under the weather).

Among our usual offerings (brought about through the randomness of history) we were able to play a track from the E-Con release from earlier in the day, ‘Love Hertz‘, which is, as you’d expect from E-Con, an eclectic mix of electronic endeavours, all worthy of airplay. To help choose the track we would play I got my 10 year old to find a random number generator online (all part of his education, I assure you) and let it decide. As a result of that, track 11,  ‘Beg For Ecstacy (feat Mirette McGauran) – The Black Hundred‘, can be heard about the midpoint of the show.

The release, of 20 tracks, is available on Bandcamp on a Pay What You Want/Name Your Price basis although I urge you to support the label with a donation.

You can hear the show (again) here, the page also has the playlist. 🙂

Incidentally, the first record played when BBC Radio 1 launched was ‘Flowers in the Rain’ by The Move (not something by Traffic as I misremembered).

And while we’re here; ‘Waltz in Black’ by The Stranglers was used as the theme music to various and varied TV shows hosted by the late bon vivant, raconteur and restaurateur Keith Floyd, sadly missed.

Mixcloud-Fused-Upload-Pic-Colouriser-160902Last night’s show was a diversion from the usual Fused format. Keith, the host of §Wired§, was on a break so we agreed to leapfrog our shows (I would put on a show rather than there be an empty studio (and he would return next week)).

I decided to do something a little different from the norm, by way of a thank you really, thank you to the guys at Globegig Radio who provide the facility for us to put on our shows without the iniquity of adverts, they do it for the love and variety of music.

Thank you to Keith, who’s show I have been listening to since the early days and without his support and generosity I wouldn’t be here doing Fused.

Thank you to all the people who set aside a couple of hours of their week to listen in, we all have busy lives and I appreciate folk can be time-poor, so that commitment is respected and appreciated.

And thanks to all the independent electronic artists who’s creative output fuels the show, along with more established/commercial offerings we enjoy and play from the past and the present.

So, to tie all that together I decided to do a mix session (on the decks, as it were), with all the artists in the set being those whom Keith has introduced myself and his listeners to over the last year or two. Frankly, I could have put on a set that was many hours long, but in the end managed to bring it down to 80-odd minutes in the mix. All the artists are independent electronic wonders who make music for all the right reasons and remain unique as a result.

However, the opening of the show, the first half-hour, was dedicated to a sound project called City & Memory. Stuart Fowkes has been diligently beavering away, curating hundreds of field recordings from around the world and earlier this year he opened up the files for a project called ‘The Next Station‘. Sound artists were invited to re-imagine the field recordings and present them for inclusion.

The project has received positive attention from the likes of The Guardian, The Wire, The Vice/Motherboard and other outlets including the BBC World Service.

Several ‘Friends of Fused’ (many of them members of the E-Con Republic (associated with the net label E-Con) Facebook Group), fielded submissions which were selected for the project. We asked the contributors for copies of their work for a select showcase, and those recordings and re-imaginings were presented last night at the outset.

An eventful show all round and one I had much fun doing, particularly the mix session (hopefully showing there’s life in the old DJ yet 😉 ). But, ultimately, without all those previously mentioned it could not and would not have happened. Thanks to you all.

You can hear the show here.
